I hadn't seen it either, but later this afternoon I saw this on yahoo. I am assuming that this is what they are talking about.

Kramer, from Seinfeld, was the ultimate aging "Hipster Doofus" as Jerry himself called him. I personally think he is a great, if exaggerated, example of a hipster done well.

Think of hipsters as non-conformists, who in the ultimate act of irony, mostly try to conform with each other. The really cool ones don't conform with anyone, though, ala Kramer. True non-conformist hipsters are rare, but they exist. They usually just don't look like every other hipster around, but you can still spot them.

With everything cultural, there is an early adopter, then a stage where a trend grows, then something becomes widespread. The Hipsters are right in that middle phase. Not trendsetters, but too cool for the rest of society.

Rio Rita has got to be the quintessential hipster bar. Just go there if you want to see examples of Austin hipsters.

How will I know when I meet a true hipster? Give me some other examples of a true hipster besides Kramer.

Paste Magazine did a great article on the evolution of hipsters over the past decade. It's likely you've seen a number of these types all over Austin, usually drinking a PBR or Lone Star because it's 'ironic' to drink crap beer:

The Evolution of the Hipster 2000-2009 :: Culture :: Features :: Paste

I'd peg most hipsters in their late 20s to mid 30s.

hipster douchebaggery has declined with the economy. Instead of being ironically poor, they are now actually poor.

I got no problem with 'em. Those who dress like that and actually are pursuing something (art, a business, music), that's cool. They're doing their own thing. For many it's all about looking cool.

They are no more ridiculous than say, soccer moms, who are truly ridiculous.
