KOTH has many more inside jokes that only people from Central Texas would get. Much more of a dry humor than Beavis and Butthead as well.

Still kinda amazing that so many great animators/cartoonists come from this area.

Berkeley Breathed, the man behind Bloom County and Opus, did a comic strip while living in Austin, for the Daily Texan (the UT student newspaper.) Supposedly this is where he got his start, but I don't know if that's true.

A lot of the animators are unknown because they're part of the huge video game industry here. Most of the creative rich folks I know in Austin made their money in that realm and now many of them have moved on to other paths in life having nothing to do with animation, music, or programming.

I don't know that there are very many cartoonists here, if any. We have the usual locals who get into local papers, but I don't think any of the nationally syndicated cartoon strips are done by anyone who lives in Austin. Mike Judge would be the closest thing to that. Someone might be able to correct me, I'm certainly not a repository of information about this stuff so take it all with a grain of salt.

I did know about Breathed's Austin connection.
What about the "so many" that equus mentioned?
Just curious.

I don't think they're snobish enough to be from Austin. To be from Austin, they'd have to spend at least half their day talking about how their town is better than any other town.

When we moved to TX people couldn't stop laughing when we told them our last name is Gribble. Our favorite episode is "Trouble With the Gribbles." Even funnier is my FIL was an exterminator.

I don't understand why suddenly all of the surprise with Austitude, as if no one had ever heard of it prior to now. It's nothing new.

Not at all close to Austin RL, but pretty accurate for Leander or Cedar Park, I would think (and that was my opinion when I actually lived in Austin).

I'm one of the viewers who doesn't realize the entertainment value of a series until it ends, so I'm usually way behind.

Peggy's maiden name is Platter, and of course so is LuAnn's.

Luby's Cafeterias are based in Houston and located regionally in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Mississippi. The "LuAnn Platter" is a special value package combination on the cafeteria line. I laugh every time I hear the name "Platter" mentioned on the show. It was incorporated just for the inside joke payoff.

No self-respecting Texan is complete without having some sort of Texas-shaped item. Hank has a traditional plywood plaque on the wall. He has a true Texan reverence for the Alamo, and he god-danged should ... boy, I'll tell you what. (So do I). He holds almost as much reverence to the Dallas Cowboys, propane and propane accessories.

As for cowboys, any observant southwesterner will tell you the only place you wear new blue jeans is to church, until they fade and soften up. You never polish boots unless they're your best pair for church, and a good hat has sweat stains and a random pushed-out crease or two from getting it slammed in, on, or by something or someone. If spurs are seen, they're almost worn down, and you can bet they're accompanied by the smell of a sweaty horse, cow manure or both from very recent use. Long sleeve shirts are worn constantly, unless you let your hair down and change to a tee shirt and an accompanying baseball cap.

Real cowboys and cowgirls exist, and they would be the first I'd turn to if I were in trouble around here. Faith, family, friends and love of country is a true way of life. I admire that, I'll tell you what.

Luby's Cafeterias were out of San Antonio, they then spread to Austin, Houston, and Dallas. Several years ago much of the company's stock was bought by two of the Pappas brothers, from Houston, and are senior managers. The company, now headquartered in Houston, also owns Fuddrucker's (also from San Antonio originally).
