I agree. Authentic is only important if the restaurant claims it is. Torchy's makes non-traditional tacos. Damn tasty ones too.

I ate at Moonshine Grill this weekend. Tasty, interesting take on American comfort food. The seared pecan crusted catfish was terrific. Highly recommended.

Ate at Chez Zee on Friday night. I had the Ahi Tuna, she had the salmon. We both enjoyed our meals and the atmosphere. First time eating there for both of us.

Less than 5 minutes from me. Thanks so much!

Oh yum! I had a bun kebab. It's like a hamburger in the idea that it's a patty on a bun but oh so good and flavored with so many spices. Oh and it's only 3.99! Well worth the drive from anywhere in town.

We ate at The Root Cellar in San Marcos last night. My husband and I celebrated our 31st anniversary. Our son is in graduate school at San Marcos, so we wanted to drive down there to share the occasion with him. I thought we wouldn't find anything special, but we did! We loved The Root Cellar! The food was wonderful, and at a reasonable price for well made food. (Three of us, with drinks and a shared dessert ate for about $65.) The service was superb. They have micro-brew beers, too. Really a personal place. Veggies were very fresh, salmon and shrimp cooked just right. Everything very tasty. Even the iced tea was really good. We had a bread pudding that was divine, and was also huge. The three of us shared it for desert. The place is small and has an intimate feel, classy, but not really fancy. It is not wheelchair accessible. It is below street level, and has cement steps here and there. Other than for accessibility, I would give this place 5 stars!

There is not a lot of great food in San Marcos, in my experience. I would eat at the cafe on the square, but otherwise, there just isn't much. So we were very happy to find this place! We will be back!

Umm . . . I love me some Frans! We usually walk to it, it is a long walk but helps us justify the buttered buns and onion rings!

Speaking of the rest of SoCo/S. 1st, ate last week at Elizabeth Street Cafe, pricey but great atmosphere and service and the food was fabulous, had gulf shrimp bun mi, YUM!! The prices are a bit ridiculous (especially if you have ever had bun mi for about 35 cents in Vietnam) but still . . . I'll be going back!

Torchy's is very good, even though it's not authentic.

My only problem with Torchy's is that it's ridiculously overpriced.

I can get twice the amount of tacos that are just as good for the same price at a taco truck.

Bombay Bistro had a delicious lunch buffet and a very attentive staff. Love that place! Went to the one in Brodie Oaks but I heard there are multiple locations?
