Can anyone tell me the main difference between these two areas? In terms of location and price. I'm out of school in my mid 20s looking for a place that is pretty quiet and laid back yet somewhat close to downtown. I was told these 2 places would be a good fit. I'm looking to rent a 1 bedroom or loft.....any ideas what they will run?

Hyde Park is by the university. Travis Heights is just south of the river and is more eclectic and artsy. If I were young and single, I'd be in Travis Heights.

I would also pick Travis Heights! It has an atmosphere that is unmatched in Austin imho. South Congress Ave can't be beat!!

Unless you want to stay close to the University, I'd also say Travis Heights. It's closer to downtown and lots of non-University related things. That's the main difference; Hyde Park would have a lot of residents who live there because they work/go to UT. If you like the "professional student" lifestyle, hanging out with college students in coffee shops and bars, Hyde Park would be better. If you want more 20-something und up professionals, Travis Heights is superior.

Any new info on Travis Heights vs. Hyde Park for 2014? I'm considering moving to Austin from the Bay in the next couple months and narrowed it down to these 2 neighborhoods - curious to get a bit more of the scoop before I visit in a couple weeks.

Me:
Early 30s
Single
Employed (work from home)
Will have a car, but walkable/public transpo friendly is a plus

Thanks in advance!

Six of one, half a dozen of the other!

TH is closer to the Town Lake Trail, both have lots of local businesses and reasonable (for Austin) public transportation. Look for a place in both -- there is not that much supply -- and take what works best for you

Can't go wrong with either. Hyde park will have more options and be slightly cheaper. Both great areas...

My vote would be for Hyde Park. A long established classic central Austin neighborhood with tons of character, huge trees, great mix of people, including students, professors. Fewer tourists in Hyde Park, too.

Both are pre-war beautifully treed neighborhoods with excellent connectivity. Travis Heights location is hard to beat, adjacent to the River, and close proximity to major activity centers of S. Congress, S. 1st and S. Lamar. . .walk to downtown on pleasant weather days - truly the heart of it all.

Hyde Park is a bit more removed North of the University - but still excellent by most Austin standards for proximity to Downtown.

The other neighborhood in this category is Clarksville/Old West Austin - probably my favorite.

It wasn't too long ago that proximity to South Congress was a big negative. Same goes for downtown which offered very little apart from bars and clubs and was a ghost town after 5 pm. I've always considered the area around UT to be the heart of Austin, but that's just my opinion.
