dont forget that formula one, and other sanctioning bodies have tire manufacturer competitions, and they do just fine. perhaps because they set up a standard spec tire that every manufacturer has to follow.
No surprises this weekend at Dover, Hamlin and Harvick get the wins and Harvick clinches the regular season championship. Next week at Daytona should be interesting as Byron, DiBenedetto, and Johnson are all pretty close for those last 2 playoff spots. Things could get real interesting if a winless driver gets the win.
And on another note, Kyle Larson continues to collect the winnings in Outlaw!
And Stewart is really pushing to get him back in. He wants him in one of his cars.
Has it been long enough? I'd say yes.. However, I don't think OTHERS would say yes. I think it'll take until the 2022 season before it wears off enough for a corporate sponsor (Other than Haas, which we've discussed to death) to take a chance on him.
And you can bet your ass every sponsor who does take a chance on him will have a clause in the contract.
Real bummer about seven time not making his final Chase. Sadly, this was his and his teams own doing. While a fan of JJ, I don't think he would have done much in the Chase anyway. Maybe with the pressure of his back he can win a couple of the next 10 races before he hangs up his steering wheel.
William Byron is peaking at the right time. May give Denny and Kevin some competition.
NASCAR is planning to convert the 2 mile speedway in California to a hybrid mix of Martinsville with long straightaways and Bristol's high banks.
By reconfiguring the track - the footprint of Auto Club will be reduced and allow some of the land to be used for other purposes.
The plan is called "Next Gen in California".
While I'm all for short tracks, with only 3 currently in the NASCAR series, I wonder if this is not also partly due to the lack of attendance at Auto Club? When built it had a capacity of 122,000. It was downsized to 68,000 seats and the in the past years only about half of those were filled. The racing in the last decade just wasn't worth watching.
In the first decade of Auto Club, the racing there was really good. Gordon, Kurt Busch, Rusty Wallace. Elliot Sadler's win over Kasey Kahne and Mark Martin in 2004. Even Jeremy Mayfield won there!
Let's not forget Auto Club is the home that built 7-time champ Jimmy Johnson. JJ had his first Cup win there in 2002. Kyle Busch also had his first win at Fontana.
The racing became blah in the past decade or so. We can't fault the track, but we can fault the cars. The newer COT and Gen 6 cars just didn't like Fontana. Being so aerodynamically dependent didn't make good side by side racing or allow much passing.
Maybe a short track will breath new life into Auto Club.

I've always thought that Michigan and Fontana are two of the most boring tracks on the circuit. A few laps of 3-5 wide after the green flag and on restarts then everyone gets spread out and it's follow the leader all day. They're much more suited to open wheel racing than stock cars. This will be the best thing to happen to Fontana since it opened. I was actually kind of hoping they'd take Fontana off the schedule now that Toyota's HQ is no longer in Torrance.
