I am looking for a relatively inexpensive, small and reasonably cute car to drive around the city with occasional weekend trips. I am living in NYC and have a dedicated parking space but it is outdoors, so I am trading in my BMW for something that I can sort of beat up but will still be reliable and easy on the gas mileage. I also go antiquing occasionally and would like something I can fit some smaller pieces of furniture in.
That is a shame. They are the only cars that make sense living in a dense, very urban environment.
In a dense urban environment you are not so likely to have a high speed offset crash. I do not think you should worry about these crash tests.
The Fit is a great subcompact. But I would wait for the new one because it has a significantly improved engine and transmission. The Mini is not especially reliable. The 500 is a Fiat, which for me means it has another three years to prove itself before I'd consider one.
I like the look of both the Fiat and the Mini a lot better than the Fit. But in terms of everything I am reading, the Fit is probably a much better car.
My 500 has 12,000 trouble free miles.
I waited until i saw car magazines had long term 500s in their fleet and they all said positive things about reliability so i bought one. Ive owned 2 minis bith had odd rattles and once out of warranty bmw pricing on repairs... 1100 for water pump at 65k miles
Only caveat with Fiat is get one no sunroof if headroom is concern. I know parking is a non issue but i love finding parking spots in manhattan w the fiat.
Ps i have the cabrio 5speed.. Fun. Lots of headroom
Id tedt drive the cars and devide. mini of Manhattan and fiat of manhattan ate close by.. But ive heard bad reviews on sales dept at manhattan. I bought mine in tysons corner, va abd drove it home. Fiat of Edison, NJ posts good prices on their site.

I like the Fit but the 500 makes me smile. The fit is an appliance.. A toaster oven.
The fiat will make you want to drive to the Fiat cafe in nolita and stare at your car as you mangia.
Lol.
