SUV vs Station Wagon right there, and the forester is cheaper.
Similar cargo space, but a shorter wheelbase so easier to park, higher ride so easier to see the road, easier to get into and out of, better approach and depart angles for off pavement treks.
I bought my Outback even though the mpg is slightly less (24/30 Outback vs. Forester 24/32), the tank is bigger (18.5 Outback vs. 15.9 Forester), so the Outback has a much longer range (550 Outback vs. 509 Forester).
The Outback also has a higher towing capacity (2700 lbs. Outback vs. 1500 lbs. Forester).
Finally, although it is highly subjective, IMHO, I find the Outback to be a visually and aesthetically appealing vehicle. It is shapely with beautiful curves in comparison to the boxier and stodgier Forester.
Dare I say, it is a sexier vehicle and it offers comparable cargo and passenger volume, fuel efficiency, handling, ground clearance, and off-road capability than the Forester and other similar sized SUVs like the Ford Escape and Toyota RAV4, at a competitive price.
Unless a wagon or SUV can haul a 4x8 sheet of something the way they used to when I was younger, I have no use for them.....really, what use are all those SUV things, they don't even make a good 4x4 station wagon...and don't get me going on all those people who buy a 2 wheel drive SUV because they are cheap or want to still feel like a off roader.
What I never understood was guys who buy SUVs and then lower them. Thus really driving what amounted to a station wagon type vehicle. If you took a old station wagon and had it lifted and big tires installed and called it a SPORT UTILITY VEHICLE and gave the image of a do anything climb anywhere unbeatable super tough vehicle translating those qualities to the driver you would of sold more station wagons. That's pretty much what a SUV is anyway.
The minivan simply replaced the station wagon pure and simple. I remember a time when you could not give away a Suburban or a four door pickup. They were only purchased by the state as road construction transportation.
