your idea of a fair deal is where a dealership doesn't make a penny selling a 50,000 car. Any other business, a 50K product is sold with a 10-20 Grand markup. If I told you I'm selling a 50K car 2000 over invoice (a tiny 4% markup, an unbelievably small markup for any other industry) you would have a heart attack

The low mark-up is because the dealership is a middleman -- a distributor only. The manufacturer is enjoying higher margins.

Yep, just like DSLR's. Retailers aren't making money off these high end cameras. They're making it off the accessories (filters, memory cards, batteries, etc)

It's not the fact that you're trying to make a profit, it's your way of doing it. Why do you think customers usually hate car buying experiences. The whole process is just sleazy and filled with dishonesty (from both sides mind you)
Whenever I made an offer for a new car - a figure I would write on a piece of paper and shove across the desk to him - the salesman always screwed his face up and said he had to talk to the sales manager. I walked out once and went to another dealership. Why don't salesmen have autonomy? All they are doing is either cutting or increasing his commission.
I buy used cars from private sellers these days. Cash in hand beats 60 months financing.
Why can't one walk into a dealership with $20K and make an offer on a car? A salesman/sales manager knows that is the ultimate deal but can't do it. Cash is instant commissions in one's pocket but the federal government wants to control us.
If I had 20K, I'd invest it where I'm making well over the current 60 month loans on new cars, around 2 or 3 percent.

Thats because dealerships make money off of Finance, warranties, dealer add-ons( 500 dollar leather protection ), and the service department.

Would people be happy buying cars if they had to wait 6-8 months for their car to be built and shipped to them?
What if you had to sell your car private party before you could get approved for a loan to buy another car?
Not saying all dealers are great, because they aren't, but they serve a purpose. People want cars now, and want to trade now. Dealers facilitate that. Otherwise, have fun waiting for the manufacturer to ship your car (that you've never seen or test driven before) from halfway across the country or worse, overseas.

Never said dealers don't serve a purpose. Are you saying their sales transactions are not antiquated and deceptive?
