Unfortunately, sadly, this is how safety rules get written. The FAA has a saying that all rules and regulations are written in blood and guts . . . of pilots and passengers.

You have far too much faith in 'programmers'. They aren't magic or omniscient. They are just people doing a job to get paid to buy the things they want. Nothing more.

So are we. And if we can think of it, so can they. It's that simple.

Kind of an aside: to illustrate how far coordinated autonomous vehicles have come, anyone here watching what they've been doing with drone swarms lately? This is some pretty amazing stuff:

Those drones are just flying the formation that they were programed to fly. They are not just randomly flying around the sky on their own. Programing drones to fly in a pre-planned formation, or driverless cars to drive on a pre-planned route, is one thing. Expecting them to randomly fly or drive themselves like a human pilot or driver would, is nothing but a dream, sorry to tell you.

What are roads then, other than a system of pre-planned routes?

Driving is an extremely low-level task. The dumbest in society still meet the minimum requirements to drive a car. GPS has already removed most of the deeper thought; driving is basically just steering between the lines and not hitting stuff, and we're still not great at it as a species.

That's not what I meant. These so called driverless cars are driven on the same roads over and over with the help of a human, so they can map the route and learn how to navigate that particular route. But there are too many roads to do that everywhere. Plus routes are continually changing due to construction, weather and other causes. Teaching a driverless car to drive around the same route over and over is one thing. But when the car comes to a sandbag in the road that wasn't there the last time, the driverless car has no idea what to do. So it will just freak out and crash into something. That is not a problem for a human driver. Because we have brains.
