the transmission i use in a particular vehicle depends on what that vehicle is for. my grand marquis for instance has an automatic. it is my daily driver in stop and go traffic.
my mustang is going to be my hot rod so it keeps the manual trans because it is fun to drive and i get to control when the trans is shifted.
my falcon will be my back up driver, so the manual goes away and an automatic goes in. it will make teh car easier to drive, again in stop and go traffic, but it will also eliminate any clutch chatter
Because I derive pleasure from driving a sports car (C6 Vette) and manual transmisison gives me more control. Plus they are sold cheaper than automatic due to the low demand of them.
Short answer: Because that's what's I ended up with.
I ended up with my kid's old stick Corolla after he got a new car and moved out. He's a big fan of manuals and just bought one of the last Ram 2500s with a stick. I wanted a high-mpg daily driver and no one was using the old Toyota -- so it's what I drive.
I'm an old truck driver, and can handle multi-range, double-clutch, you name it. Even driven the old twin-sticks a few times. I've got so much experience with different types that shifting is just a background task I don't think about. I'd prefer an automatic since I'm driving in city traffic, but it's not important enough to worry about. I do find it funny that a manual transmission is gradually becoming an anti-theft system.
Pretty simple. I enjoy driving. I like having control over how my engine revs. Even the good autos I have had have been in gear limbo at times of my drive. It's a shame they are dying.,
Why do people still knit, weave, paint, do math calculations or soduku puzzles when we have machines that can do all of these things as well or better? Why does anyone still split wood with an axe? Why learn to shoot a bow and arrow when guns are so much more effective? Why does anyone write and mail letters anymore?
We do lots of things machines can do as well or better simply because we the the doing of them and/or because we can add our own personal creative signature to the way they are done. Driving a car with manual transmission is the same thing.
I think most people choose a manual simply because its more fun to drive. I drive an automatic Honda Civic now but really miss my 5-speed Mustang GT. I really like the Honda so next year I plan to get a manual Civic SI. If I have to drive 5 days a week to my boring job I at least want the commute to be fun lol.
