good for the test pilots; it's just their LIFE they're saving, that's all! an excellent analogy.
It's my understanding that the telephone keypad does not match the 10-key calculator keypad because the people who designed the telephone keypad did not use the 10-key calculator. It would have been better if they were both the same.
That sounds like me. I once spent 20 minutes on the shoulder of a rainy Florida freeway trying to figure out how to turn the windshield wipers on in my rental.
I rented a car in Hays, Kansas back in 2012. I would unlock it with the key, and then the alarm would go off. It turned out I had to unlock it with the key fob. I'm not sure I ever had to use the wipers; there was a drought at the time. In fact, I was able to walk through the park in the early morning without getting my shoes wet.

That's stupid: What stronzo would program the factory alarm to sound when using a key to unlock a door or other opening on a vehicle?
Again, overthinking things at the concept, marketing, and or mfg. level.
And to those who think we oppose all change? Incorrect.
We oppose (1) change simply for sake of change, and (2) change for the sake of coolness, or change that defies common sense.
If that change forces one to take their eyes off driving for more time than for less, complicates the steps required to do basic things(adjust climate, adjust a seat, change a radio station, engage/disengage Cruise, or indicate turns, and oh yes: steer the car!), then that is not change for the better.

Some of it is ridiculous. One of my friends bought a new car years ago, and the daughter took it out and tried to get gas. She call dad from the gas station because no matter what they did they could not get the gas door open. It turned out that all the doors had to be locked or unlocked, I can’t remember which, before it would open.
That's a fair point. If the gear selector is just an electrical switch, it can be anywhere and look like anything. Not that I want to give anyone any ideas...
Any bets on how long before it becomes a voice command ala Alexa or Siri ?

Just bought a 2017 Honda Civic, and at the first time gassing up, had the same thing happen. At least the driver's door must be unlocked to open OR close the fuel door.

I agree too. I found it very distracting trying to find music to play in our last rental car with a digital menu of satellite stations. I also need reading glasses to read up close, so I have to look even longer at the screen, or put on reading glasses while I’m driving.
