Large trucks and buses made before 2010 will be prohibited from operating on California roadways starting Jan. 1. It's the final rule in a set of clean air regulations the California Air Resources Board passed nearly 15 years ago.

The rule applies to diesel vehicles that weigh at least 14,000 pounds. The air resources board said there are an estimated 200,000 vehicles that have yet to comply with the rule just days before the new year, including roughly 70,000 big rig trucks, or about 10% of the commercial motor vehicles operating in the state, according to trucking lobbying groups."

Watching our local TV news tonight there was an operator with a dozen trucks, only 2 was built after 2010. He said he plans to sell the other 10 in another state and fire his drivers. He spent his savings to build up the business and looks like he'll lose it in 2023 entirely.

I wonder how much longer before the state comes after older cars and trucks, diesel or not. California can't force residents to buy electric vehicles, but they can make the old gas fleet so hard to keep that everyone will need an EV.

I'm not against EVs, we have a small boat with an electric motor which I love, and an EV would be great for Dear Wife if I pass before her, less maintenance, no gas stations. However, getting one should be by choice, not by force.

Sorry but they’ve had 15 years to prepare for this.

Does this include trucks coming in from outside California including delivery drivers from other US states and Mexico?

Will not currently impact out of state reg'd vehicles. CARB working with DMV to withhold reg renewal on CA based rigs. There are plans to enforce out of state vehicles (especially restricting port access) but even CA knows the politics of this is touchy. They’d rather go after mom and pops vs. UPS.

If the above is correct, that might motivate California-based truckers to move their office to a small rented office in Arizona, Oregon or Nevada and keep doing business at their current location. The money saved on CA registration would cover the office rent in another state. Like banking in the Caymans.

How will this New Green Dream affect school buses? If they are exempt, than banning the trucks is discrimination. Lawyer up.

What’s their next step? Banning diesel powered passenger vehicles?

I could be wrong but I find 15 years hard to believe. Would you mind sharing a link?

So, CARB ruled in 2008 that they would ban 2010 made trucks in 2023?

This will do nothing but hurt the small independent trucker. Larger trucking companies won't be impacted since they have a newer fleet.
