Large trucks and buses made before 2010 will be prohibited from operating on California roadways starting Jan. 1. It's the final rule in a set of clean air regulations the California Air Resources Board passed nearly 15 years ago.
The rule applies to diesel vehicles that weigh at least 14,000 pounds. The air resources board said there are an estimated 200,000 vehicles that have yet to comply with the rule just days before the new year, including roughly 70,000 big rig trucks, or about 10% of the commercial motor vehicles operating in the state, according to trucking lobbying groups."
Watching our local TV news tonight there was an operator with a dozen trucks, only 2 was built after 2010. He said he plans to sell the other 10 in another state and fire his drivers. He spent his savings to build up the business and looks like he'll lose it in 2023 entirely.
I wonder how much longer before the state comes after older cars and trucks, diesel or not. California can't force residents to buy electric vehicles, but they can make the old gas fleet so hard to keep that everyone will need an EV.
I'm not against EVs, we have a small boat with an electric motor which I love, and an EV would be great for Dear Wife if I pass before her, less maintenance, no gas stations. However, getting one should be by choice, not by force.
Guy just needs to relocate the truck registrations over the border..........hellooooooo Nevada or Viva de Mexico!
Those trucks are tired beaters at this point of their lifespan........its not like they are brand new/still making payments.

Will not currently impact out of state reg'd vehicles. CARB working with DMV to withhold reg renewal on CA based rigs. There are plans to enforce out of state vehicles (especially restricting port access) but even CA knows the politics of this is touchy. They’d rather go after mom and pops vs. UPS.
The guy should setup his company as an LLC in Montana. You don’t need an actual building/address to do it. There’s companies there that will collect your PO Box mail and forward it to you also. You’ll see high end $300k and up cars with Montana plates via this, motorhomes too. They don’t have to pay the outrageous tab renewals when doing this.
Its already happening/happened. Most large fleets are out of state "based". This impacts sub-50 unit fleets the most. But it only temporary anyway - CA will restrict all truck travel to meet the requirements. They know they have the industry by the balls with control of the ports.
They wrote language into the regs that you can exempt a fleet that runs sub 1k miles in-state per truck, but that is roughly 2 trips per year (and they know that...). Its almost exactly the same distance from LA/LB ports to Blythe or Mountain Pass (250 miles).

Is this going to cause out of state trucks to stop at bordering state lines and drop trailers and then CA EV trucks will pick them up? Are they going to try and force the railroads into this? That’ll be hilarious as railroad will tell them to go f*st themselves.
I do understand what they are doing though. In order to clean the smog problems via geography/weather things, things need to change and this is a step.

Could work but if CHP notices you working solely in the state then you are busted.
RV's and high end cars aren't on the road daily in the same patterns like a delivery truck would be.

Correct, no clue how CHP handles this. ’m betting they’ll be doing more research in this as they’ll be the ones enforcing it.
