The S2000 is a fantastic option. The handling is superb, and the shifter is one of the best ever.
Not very comfortable though.
I will readily second this.
We recently purchased an '02 S2000 and MAN is that a fun car! Corners beautifully, is quite quick and pretty nice looking to boot.
You can find them for under 12K... we spent $10500 on ours and it has 40K miles on it, and it's nearly flawless in every way.
I do agree it isn't all that comfy, but we added 'butt pads' and it made it a lot better. Considering I'm 6'1 and my boyfriend is 6'3 it's hard to find a small car that is comfy, but this one fits the bill.
What about an Infiniti G35? the 2003-2004 ones are pretty popular and you can find one with 50k miles on it for about seventeen grand. They come absolutely loaded with everything, a V6, and fulfill your requirement of "sporty" and "flashy" and also "respectable".

That would probably be the closest to a Miata size car and convertible, but with more power, and manual transmission only. Saw someone take a left turn on a local street probably going 50 mph, no tire noise at all.
actually, now that I think about it, the G35 would be a pretty nice freakin' ride. I've been looking at them for a little while and they seem to be REALLY popular.. if you are okay with getting one with 90k miles on it, you can find an 03-04 G35 Coupe with the Sport package for around ten-eleven grand. You have to be patient, but the payoff would be SOO worth it.

why not just go for a 350Z they are the same car just the G35 has more tech gadgets the rest of the car is the same and the 350Z is alot cheaper on the pocket book.
I like the G35, don't get me wrong, but the older models of that car left quite a bit to be desired and they don't exactly age well. They look fanastic, they have decent power, but the rest of the car reeks of cheap. They have gotten much, much better, but if I wanted a coupe and was price limited to only getting an earlier model and didn't need backseats, I would definitely pick up a 350Z over the G35. Save a bunch of money and only give up a couple tech toys vs. the G35. I also find that what feels cheap in the earlier G35's is acceptable on the Z and the Z has overall better ergonomics and a more coherent interior design.
The Z's butt end is worse looking, though.. =/ It's not that I would need all the tech gadgets or anything, but it comes absolutely loaded. at 9-11,000 for a used G35 Coupe with the Sport package, I wouldn't complain

I don't think you would find a loaded 03-04 G35 with sport pkg for 9-10 grand and if you did it would have very high miles and chances are in was in a accident or two.
a good used G35 in decent condition would be in the $15.5-18K range
could you affod a Porsche Boxer or it's hardtop version the Cayman? Fun to drive but probably expensive to repair.
