My wife and I are moving to Baltimore next year. This forum has provided a wealth information... almost too much. Now I have a question.

In typical OCD fashion, I have already narrowed my search to a few areas. One of them lies along Highway 40, in the vicinity of Ellicott City. I am wondering what the commute is like into the downtown (I'll be working at University of Maryland Medical Center). Mapquest estimates 25 minutes, and I'm curious how accurate this will be during rush hour.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

use google maps from now on.

it allows you to check traffic, and then even change the time and day, to see the average of traffic.

I agree -- don't use Mapquest, use Google Maps. Mapquest has given me incorrect information many times -- once I was led to a vacant lot in the middle of nowhere while looking for the Walmart in South Baltimore after it first opened. Seems that Mapquest "forgot" about the Patapsco River being in between my neighborhood and the Walmart....duh.

If you are near rt.40 you could take that all the way down in the city. There's usually a few "windows" where you'll find the traffic to be light. You'll catch the stop lights but sometimes it's better than fighting the highway traffic. Hope this helps!

depending on exactly where & when, you are probably looking at somewhere in the 30-40 minute ballpark on a normal day. Not terrible, but definately a little longer than mapquest indicates.

I live 2 minutes from Historic Ellicott City. I take Edmondson Ave east, which goes through a little bit of rough hood, but hits HW 40.

I leave home @ 845, arrive in the Inner harbor @ 905.

hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies, everyone! It's going to be an interesting couple of years.

DavidSKi, I thought you were going to live at... Gallery Towers?
