the Twins lost a game and their Japanese second baseman, Tsuyoshi Nishioka. Playing his sixth game in the big leagues after seven-plus seasons in Japan, Nishioka suffered a fractured bone in his lower left leg when he was knocked to the turf of Yankee Stadium near second base by an uncommonly hard, but clean slide by Yankees right fielder Nick Swisher.
This could really hurt the Twins (not to mention Nishioka). They don't have much to plug in at second. Matt Tolbert, isn't good. Look for a trade or maybe signing Luis Castillo...
Nishioka's injury is due in large part to a cultural difference. He was on the wrong side of the bag. Incidents like this don't occur in Japanese baseball because the game is more polite there.

not a chance they'll bring back Castillo, Gardy got rid of him for a reason. They will simply go to the Twins store and refill the spot.

I don't know much about Japanese baseball, yet, but the chatter says that take out slides aren't as common in Japan.
First, Nishioka's knee wasn't facing directly to first base. You need to face you knee directly at the base, and into the runner, so that if contact is made the knee can 'hinge' and lessen some of the impact.
Second, he just looked like he was unprepared for the play. Swisher was on top of him before he had a chance to jump to avoid the play.
Too bad, I was looking forward to seeing how Nishioka did this year

The Twins are masterful at signing and developing new talent. Here where I live, their Appalachian League team has won 14 division titles and 8 league championships since 1978. We've seen Puckett, Gaetti, Hrbek, Koskie, Morneau, Pierzynski, Span, Garza, Tolbert, Mauer and more whose names I cannot recall. The Twins have another rookie team in the Gulf Coast League that has produced its share of future stars also.
