The Yanks are in and have been in there own stratesphere, for a long time:
Here's the payrolls of both teams the last 5 seasons.
2008, the Yanks 209 Mil, the Sox 133 (-76)
2007, the Yanks 218 Mil, the Sox 155 (-63)
2006, the Yanks 194 Mil, the Sox 120 (-74)
2005, the Yanks 203 Mil, the Sox 126 (-77)
2004, the Yanks 184 Mil, the Sox 127 (-57)
In 2008 the Red Sox were closer to the 23rd ranked team in payroll (the Twins) than they were to the Yankees, and the way 2009 is looking the Yankees appear to be heading toward 300 Mil.
Hey, when you're an Indians fan, any team with a payroll over $100 million looks the same! Indians fans have to sell blood to help pay for Travis Hafner, they are contemplating selling naming rights to their next kids to raise money to sign Cliff Lee.

Yeah no kidding. I'm a Twins fan and we couldn't even come up with enough cash to sign Casey Blake.
The Yankees, Red Sox, and Mets are all the same to me. Although, I do respect the Red Sox farm system.
they belong up there with the yanks as well - except for the whole history thing
red sox fans better hope they can continue to stay disciplined to their farm and not fall into the recent trap the yankees have had over the past few years
the yankees teams that recently won titles were a lot like the red sox teams winning titles now
the yankees couldn't keep it well managed and then turned to desparate spending
both have bloated payrolls, obnoxious fans, obnoxious players and way too much media exposure ....... close enough for me
YANKEES UPDATE:
NOW WE KNOW WHY THE YANKEES HAVEN'T HAD TIME TO COMPLETE THE CAMERON DEAL TODAY. IT'S BEING REPORTED THAT THEY'VE AGREED TO A FIVE-YEAR, $82.5 MILLION CONTRACT WITH A.J. BURNETT.
THAT MEANS THE YANKEES HAVE SPENT MORE THAN $240 MILLION TO SIGN PITCHERS CC SABATHIA AND BURNETT. AS A POINT OF REFERENCE, OWNER MARK ATTANASIO PAID $223 MILLION FOR THE ENTIRE BREWERS FRANCHISE.
GOOD TO SEE THE DECLINING ECONOMY ISN'T WORRYING THE YANKEES.
