There was a brief bit of time when the dengue was 'over', now another case has popped up last week so now it's not over yet. It's a lot less than it was, though, so things seem to be improving.

Were you able to view Waipio Valley from the overlook? That's the best view. Most of the valley is taro farms and such, which would be a huge haven for mosquitoes, one would think.

Yup. Since we couldn't go down into the valley (and wouldn't have, anyway, in the rented Nissa Altima), the Overlook was where we went, and it was a beautiful view, if cloudy both days we went. Spent a lot of time there. Met some nice people and several cute, feral-seeming, 5 or 6 month-old kittens while we were there, too .

A tad premature to say it's over, perhaps, but good news nevertheless.

IT’S OVER! Dengue Fever outbreak ends, no new cases over past month | Hawaii 24/7

because people see IT'S OVER!!!! and won't continue to be proactive. we may not have any more cases, but it isn't an excuse to throw caution to the wind.

Did you read the story? It said to be diligent.

yes, I read the story, but I am guessing most people won't go past the headline. Additionally, there is an emotional satisfaction with IT"S OVER!!! and people will tend to ignore anything else. Headline should have read: Dengue: no new cases within the month, but experts urge continued precaution. It's anything BUT over.

Well - for all intent and purposes, it is over.

Unless of course you have additional information to share.

It's possible that a case here or there has been missed, and only more time will tell for sure.

But I'm with you, in that I don't understand the comment that "it's far from over".

Maybe she means that future outbreaks are inevitable, which I suppose is true.

But once this outbreak is done, it's done. It won't be lurking in the jungle, bidding its time, it will have to be imported once again.

For me, due diligence means continuing to be mindful about reducing or eliminating mosquito habitat on my property, but it does not mean bundling up and applying repellent every day.
