I would suggest that you don't show folks the "Big Island Revealed" book while you are here. I have heard that it is pretty reviled since it sends folks down private roads and suggests they do other things they shouldn't and has caused the closing of several popular spots because of increased volume of use, mess, illegal parking, etc. I have also heard that a lot of their "secret" spots are on private property and the landowners had previously allowed folks to go through but since that book has been published it has caused problems so the land owners have banned everyone. It doesn't seem to be a popular book among residents here at all. I guess it made the writer/publisher a lot of money so even though it has ruined it for a lot of other folks maybe that makes it okay? They may reincarnate as a rock if they aren't careful, though.

Saddle road isn't actually the best road to get between Hilo and Kailua. The Belt Highway - Mamalahoa Highway and all of it's other various names - circles the island around the edges and is the best way to get from one side to the other. Saddle road goes from the back of Hilo to about ten miles the other side of Waimea so it might save you ten miles overall. Saddle road goes up to the observatories and up to the military camp.

Default I Agree

We shudder when we see people reading "Maui Revealed" for the same reasons. The books are very popular, but seem to have been written from a somewhat predatory point-of-view. They don't show much aloha for the islands at all.
