You guys beat me to Clarke's Childhood's End. One of the first sci-fi books I read, and it has stayed with me ever since. It may seem dated now, but the premise was incredibly innovative for its time, typical of Clarke. Weren't they actually making it into a movie?

I also read Ender's Game without any kind of preview or clue as to its twist, and it was a stunning book, way ahead of its time (computer games teaching combat). I was also disappointed in the movie--I'd looked forward to seeing the deteriorating corpse of the giant! Personally I found the vision in Speaker for the Dead more compelling. But that takes place off-world.

Nope,not for me!
Sorry I don't know anything about the Book of Mormon and I'm unsure why the wiki says that. The only religious connotation might be the youngest son is the preferred son similar to Jacob and the coat of many colors which is Christian.

Very disappointed in the movie also. Speaker for the Dead was definitely compelling and thought provoking for me.

But the movies have actually done a spectacularly good job of adapting sci fi to the big screen, sometimes even improving on it. I give you ...

BLADE RUNNER. Perhaps the greatest science fiction movie ever made. The novel on which it is based (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick) is actually quite horrible.

MINORITY REPORT. A great movie based on a lackluster story by Philip K. Dick.

TOTAL RECALL. A fun if rather ridiculous movie based on a really boring and at times incoherent story by Philip K. Dick. (Sensing a pattern here?)

2010. A really good adaptation of Clark's novel.

STARSHIP TROOPERS. Not only did it manage to be way better than the book, but it's a fantastic piece of social satire. Sociology professors ought to show this movie to every class.

The PLANET OF THE APES movies varied all over in quality, but even the worst of them were better than the novel.

THE IRON GIANT is a fantastic movie. I've never read the book.

JURASSIC PARK is way better than the book.

LOGAN'S RUN is great. Never read the book.

THE THING (both versions) is also great. Never read the original story.

THE TIME MACHINE from 1960 is a fantastic version of that classic story. THE WAR OF THE WORLDS ain't too shabby either.

Except for having to totally disagree about "I,Robot" which I love, that's a great list! Not familiar with MR,2010,or The Iron Giant, but love the Planet of the Apes, and Jurassic Park series.
I would also include~Coma (1978)
Alien (1979)
Westworld
Runaway (1984)
Iron Man
Back to the Future (1985)

2010: Odyssey Two is the sequel to 2001: A Space Odyssey (also a movie that I love to watch when I can catch it on TV). Rendezvous with Rama is the third book of the series.

Don't feel bad. I know quite a bit about the Book of Mormon and I'm absolutely baffled at what wiki says in that regard.

I think this 1-star review at Amazon leaves no doubt that the wikipedia article is in fact .... true!

The Memory of Earth (Homecoming Saga Book 1)by Orson Scott Card

Direct plagiarism from another piece of substandard fiction

Amazon.com: Customer Reviews: The Memory of Earth (Homecoming Saga Book 1)

Actually I remember other instances on other forums that Card's books[like James Rollins] are Mormon proselytizing.

Two more Space Odyssey books. 2061 and 3001. I remember reading both in the Dawn o' Time, and they're just not as compelling as 2010, and nothing like 2001.
Space Odyssey - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rendezvous with Rama is a great book, but it isn't in the series. Still hoping for a Rama movie!

Might it just be that the Wiki writer was jumping to conclusions because Card is a Mormon?
