I always felt comfortable moving about around Dorchester, Mattapan and Roxbury even back during the 'gang era' (Humboldt, Corbet, and all the gangs named after sport teams) when I go visit my family. I guess its because the vibe is similar to the Jamaica Queens area where I'm from

I grew up in Mattapan, and to all you keyboard warriors talking **** like this area is safe: come take a walk down Morton or Blue Hill Ave at night and tell me how ****ing "safe" you feel. I have been stabbed on two occasions walking to the ****ing store, two of cousins were MURDERED, I hear gunshots all of the time, robberies, stabbings, shootings I am ****ing TIRED OF IT!!! I have been to Flatbush, the Bronx, Baltimore and South Philly and guess what IT'S ALL THE ****ING SAME BULL**** as here.

Come live here for you tell me what you feel is a "safe area"...

A Brie and a crisp white. Maybe a fresh baguette to repel the delinquents.

Reasons to not live off of BHA. That being said, BHA is no where near as bad as South Bronx, Baltimore, Brooklyn, etc.

It's not a competition but I definitely feel safer in Mattapan than most of the places you listed.

because someplaces have to be "the worst" and the low crime rates in the rest of the metro area create an anchoring bias for what locals think is a bad area.

that being said there is still worse crime in dorchester than any place in toronto or possibly anywhere in ontario but still there are whole cities with higher crime rates than the worst blocks in dot... all perspective

My mom still thinks there are bad parts of Belmont.

that's the other factor is that the city has improved significantly in living memory. the crime rates were around 2x as high in the early 90s as they are today though they dropped to record lows in the late 90s and have since risen again (something no one mentions when discussing this stuff)

Why? Because stuff like this doesn't happen in most other neighborhoods in the area.

Boy on bike gunned down in Mattapan | Boston Herald

Literally nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to these neighborhoods.
