He's a victim of one of the most common cognitive biases: availability bias/heuristics.
Availability heuristics is defined as, "When a person makes a judgment about the probability of an event based on the ease with which it comes to mind."
If channel 7 says there's a shooting in their neighborhood, they automatically assume that shootings are up.
Truth be told, they could right or they could be wrong. I honestly don't know. Just show me the stats compared to last year and I'll accept their position. I have no dog in this fight one way or the other.
As of now we can see evidence that the murder rate in Boston is trending downward from last year. That is a fact.
Their positions seems to be that even with the reduction in murders, shootings are still up. Show me the evidence and I'll concede.

Shootings were up significantly during the pandemic and coming into this year (almost 30 percent), however they appear to dropped/leveled off to previous levels of violence for at least the present time.
