What similar jobs are non-professional people getting? T trolley drivers start at $22 hr part time with a benefits package that won't be found in the private sector for that skill level. Not to mention it's a union job with a retirement. Track repair people make 35-45 hr. The trolley driver requires a GED. The track people need certain mechanical experience, but its general experience.

If it is a shift job you'll be stuck working the "coverage" shift or the least desirable one.

Then there's the issue of bus/train operators only getting part time hours and the absolute worst split shifts until they gain senority. Probably fine if you are 18 and want to start a long career but for almost anyone else it isn't particularly attractive.

Agreed. Eng has got to work with the MBTA Union to get rid of those awful split shifts. Like I said in an earlier post, I had many former coworkers who retired from the T and they all told me they hated the split shifts but suffering 4-5 years in them was the only way to seniority on the ladder. There was a time when rush hour service made sense but post pandemic, they are becoming less relevant. It's hard enough to have to report to work at 4:30-5:00am on a frigid wintry morning or roast in the 4:30-5:00pm summer sun. Split shifts do no favors to the drivers. There should be 3 shifts for operators, morning, afternoon, and evening only.

APTA released a report documenting their findings on the workforce shortage. They found a number of core issues, with pay and schedules being the most commonly referenced by those surveyed. Pages 23-25 go into detail with the split shift and union senority issues.

The report also indicates that 96% of agencies are experiencing a workforce shortage, with 84% saying it is impacting service. According to the MBTA 3/23 board of directors operating budget preview the agency is well below budgeted headcount.

Whether they build a new one or not, the old one still needs to be dismantled, so this is a positive step. Something is happening.
