Asking me??? He should be death by firing squad so we don't have to waste decades of incarceration costs, nor will he have an opportunity to harm another human being again. But we can't do that here in tolerant Massachusetts. Facing that reality, I'm OK with him wasting away until he's 80 or whatever and hopefully he'll croak within the year after release if he makes it that far. But in this thug loving state, we'll realistically be lucky if he gets 20 so 50 is my wishful thinking.
The harsh reality is the cycle's got to end somewhere.

There's plenty of people who do OD and die if it makes you feel any better.

far too much money is spent on drug addicts and apparently enough isn't being spent.

The best way to stop the cycle is to stop it from starting. But we want to have an expensive and ineffective "war on drugs" instead. Societal choice.

It comes down to the individual person - don't do drugs. How's that for starters?

Great. "Just Say No". That's proven effective as a society.

What do you suggest Einstein?

At the end of the day many people don't care that much about this issue unless it's one of their own family members affected by it- and even then some family members just close the door on the person with the issue. Sure, you can have some empathy for someone going through this but in the end these people brought it upon themselves. Every now and then there are a few inspiring stories but not many.

Somehow I made it into my 40's without ever trying a drug.

Looking to countries that have implimented society wide reforms in how they prevent people from using drugs in the first place, and implementing them. There have been several countries that have greatly reduced drug and alcohol use, especially among the young.

And looking to more effective, in regards to results to both outcomes and costs, treatment programs, for those that due succumb. Our system is extremely expensive with marginal results.

We need to stop thinking of this as moral issue, and think of it as as a public health issue that is costing our society a huge amount of money, but also a gigantic loss of opportunity costs.

Not coincidently, doing so will also help with the so called "illegal" crisis as much of that migration is forced by money (and resulting violence) we export to Latin America in our thirst for drugs.

We just seem to love wasting money. Wasting money on failed programs, wasting money on ineffective health care systems, wasting money on a "war on drugs", wasting money on trying to fix problems we cause ourselves instead of getting at the root of the problem and addressing those in cost effective ways.

Wasting money on letting illegals in and throwing money at them should be added to your list.

I really don't care if someone does drugs. Their choice. I don't appreciate my tax dollars going to take care of them someday though. There's just a lot of morons out there these days. Too many people who cannot take care of themselves.

Amigo, you mean like Portugal where Mass and Cass-type zombies get to choose between jail and rehab and peddlers get to choose between the slammer and the big house? Or did you stop reading right after you saw "decriminalize drugs?"

Im guessing part of the reason people turn to drugs is there already are few options for them in this country for a decent paying job. A degree doesn't even get people much anymore especially if they don't put forth much effort in their career. It's only going to get worse.
