One of my friends never made it past the 8th grade... he is a self made man and quite wealthy and came her from Ireland as a teen by himself and went into the high end home construction business...

He has lots of sayings...

One is how can the government ever go broke... every time a dollar changes hands 3 times the government gets a dollar in taxes?

Don't know why more people don't understand that. I think they're still of the belief money grows on trees ... like my kids did when they were younger.

Overall so many did not like it.
There's usually a lower voter turn out rate for June elections, and it was no different in June of 1978 when Prop 13 was on the ballot. 23.4% of registered California voters turned out; out of those, 62.6% voted for it and 34% voted against it (3.4% of the votes were invalid or blank).

It is the only tax that is not dependent on the means of the person to pay it, unless being homeless is considered a legitimate alternative. It is also a tax that is not connected to a person's use of services the tax pays for.

Nice to see that some of us here can understand and reason, like Boxus.

I seem to recall a child, in response to his mother saying "we don't have money for that," saying with child-like wonder, "just go to the store and buy some money."

That kid will one day be a great problem solver.

Our last property tax here in Paradise was $ 2687, a 3.7% yearly increase on a house we got for $ 254 K in 2015. With similar increases to be expected, I figure ten years from now we'll owe maybe $ 3,800. Add in insurance, home and 2 cars, we are looking at maybe 7-8 K dollars a year before buying a loaf of bread, in the year of 2028.
We pay the taxes and all insurance once a year, by withdrawing the money from our savings account.
With the constant increases and the draining of savings we'll have problems paying that if we live much longer; I hope not.

As for the social security cost of living adjustment - all increase is taken away with the raise of Medicare premiums.
I'm not whining, there are millions in the state under much harder circumstances.
But once we run out of savings to pay taxes and insurance we have no other choice than move to another country, be it Hungary, my birthplace, or my wife's native Colombia.
We can survive there on our social security alone, renting a room or small apartment, but I'd hate lo leave this country I love and call my own since 1974.

So what's your solution? You'd be paying a lot more in property taxes if Prop 13 were overturned.

Look at what homeowners in Illinois have to deal with:
