Of course? Yet people still die from heat in 2016 with A/C. It is a given every summer, regardless of the technology. My point was our ancestors didn't need electricity and appliances because they were adapted to live without it.
We can't live without TVs, refrigerators, washers and dryers, computers, lights, HVAC, cars, planes, ATMs, elevators, factories, plumbing, etc because it's all we know and we've molded our lives around them.
Put someone from the 17th or 18th century in the middle of Times Square and they would have a heart attack. They made it without all of this, we're making it with.
The Matthew death toll in Haiti has topped 1,000, and now there's a cholera outbreak. While SC was generally lucky, they were not. If you plan on giving to the American Red Cross, be cautious.
A report came out saying that they raised $500m in aid in 2010 and only ended up building 6 houses. It's only one report and I personally do not believe the Red Cross is a shady scheme, but if you plan on giving, do some research to make sure your money gets where it needs to go to help those people.
Downtown houses faired pretty well during Matthew. 29 suffered noticeable damage with 4 considered major. An old antebellum style house at 102 Spring didn't make it, but it had been left to rot for over a decade anyway.
Your point sucks. The vast majority of the world's population lives without those things. I've had enough hyperbole the last week to last a lifetime.
Not entirely sure how that disagrees with his point, we here in the US are used to those things to the point that at least 95% of homes have stuff like TV's, and I think in most other countries AC isn't as prevalent. But I sure as hell wouldn't want to live in Charleston without AC.
