And by retreat, I point out that HT pulled out of Atlanta and Greenville-Spartanburg when Publix entered the market. But they do seem to still coexist in Charleston.
Perhaps HT is not necessarily looking to sell, but rather is trying to find an investment partner to prepare for the onslaught in their hometown market.
I've heard this as well. It would probably be the best scenario as far as making sure the HQ stays in Charlotte.
If Ahold buys they will probably turn all the Union County locations into Stop & Shop. Stop & Shop's are big on Long Island and Union County is a southern borough of Long Island. LOL.

Ahold used to be the owners of Bi-Lo here in Charlotte & also the owner of a food-service distributor. (forget the name) They sold out when one of their American companies (I think that it was the food-service company) had an embezzlement scandal and they lost a ton of money.
Last year people were saying it would be Food Lion that goes down and Harris Teeter would prevail,
but I knew Food Lion would will not leave without putting up a fight and lowering prices, also you have to
know they are all competing with Super Center Walmarts now.

I'm hearing rumors that Florida based Publix could be buying out Harris Teeter. Its no secret Publix aggressively wants to enter NC. Its opening its first NC store in Charlotte.

If ONLY we could get Wegmans to consider buying HT and their distribution center!!
I'm from Western NY (grew up there) - I still don't get the obsession with Wegmans. Just another grocery store to me. I'd rather not see Wegmans buy it, just so I don't have to see 1000 posts on Facebook from all my friends blabbering about Wegmans... I have a lot of friends here who moved from ROC as well and you'd think it was the holy grail or something. I don't get it.
