So the city *has been* running it well... Right up until the state decided to steal it from us. THEN we let it become a political problem and that's justification for the state running it?
Well, that's an interesting take...
very interesting. Especially since this a GOP run GA and they are supposedly the party of LESS government. Total sham IMO.

It started, IMO, when Chief Rodney Monroe moved to take control of the airport's security. This happened last year. I'll copy what I said about this previously in answer to the question "Why Now?".
My theory is it's happening now because US Airways is behind it. You are correct they like CLT's low cost and independence from politics. Unfortunately Chief Rodney Monroe last year made a move where the city council dissolved the independent airport police force and Airport security was placed under Monroe's control. Pure power play by Monroe. This alarmed US Airways and others who became concerned about petty city politics affecting airport operations. Airport bill pushed into the GA to fix it.

seems like a minor detail IMO. Unless the police change made it more difficult to operate the airport I can't see why it would be a big deal.
I did read a few stories on it and some described it as petty high school drama between the CMPD and airport authorities. I read a story about the arrest of Rand Paul's son at CLT for underage drinking being a big deal. Rumor was he may have been served in KY.
pretty embarrasing all around.

It more than doubled the cost of the police force charged to the airport. The higher costs to operate the airport get passed on to the airlines. Costs are a very big deal to the airlines.
Well you can blame the airport police for not keeping a good watch on the airport. Jerry Orr was not doing his job to make sure the security at the airport was doing its job.

OK I got to call you on that and also Felt to some degree. Just how does the state run the airport?

The cost of the city police wasn't a problem, it was the power brokers and developers who felt they were losing control and might have to compete for contracts/bids instead smooching up to ole Jerr. See, everything boils down to money and power at the end of the day. Paying a little extra cash for "real" or trained police officers instead of rent-a-cops was a bonus....the airport is doing fine and the cop swap excuse for creating an airport authority is pitiful.

Would you happen to know what the pay rate for the rentals was? Would be interesting since they can get paid some pretty awful wages. Maybe even less than the proposed D.C. Wal-Mart wages.
The thing about the cops is political and the craziness about them not being able to investigate minor crimes if it meant going out in to town was also crazy but I can't imagine airport police doing it either.
Still, what was the seed? What tripped this thing and why were their no hearings about it?
