How about people get out of the service related employment and get a different job where they can count on their salary/hourly rate and not count on tips?
If there weren't any servers, how would you get your nice meal out at a restaurant? See how that works?

I know exactly how it works, I was a server and bartender before I was legally old enough to purchase or serve alcohol and I ended up finding a different job right before I was actually legally old enough to purchase or serve alcohol.
When I was a server and bartender back in the late 1970's I used to make $400.00 a week in tips without fail.
So I am curious why there is such an issue with those who complain about not getting good tips.

The law changed. Remember in the 70s you only paid taxes on the crappy wage. Now they pay taxes on the wage plus a percentage of the establishment's take. That means that if the waiter/waitress gets stiffed it's a different ball game.

But don't the higher tips offset the lower tips? I don't know what the percentage is, but if they pay taxes on 15% (just as example) of the establishment's take, then all of us 20-percenters are giving them tax-free income.

And if not, doesn't the newish law dictate that they have to be paid in minimum wage with the total of their earnings and tips?

I understand what you're saying, but if you have a bad night it's compounded by the tax structure. I think it was Reagan who got the taxes increased on servers but allowed the wages to stay sub-standard. In Europe the wait-staff is paid a living wage & tipping is done for exceptional service. There was talk of doing that here but it didn't happen. I always over tip. I worked as a waitress in high school & my mother supported herself by working as a waitress when she was in high school.
The economy is still unstable enough that there are still people waiting tables who should be doing something else. It's an honest living & people shouldn't be looking down on the people who do that job.
I'm generally a 20% tipper but my one pet peeve is getting carded at a business dinner. In those cases I only tip 10% and leave a note to the server why they got stiffed.

I sincerely doubt it's the server's idea. The poor guy wants to keep his job, that's all.
