Well, we have no ties keeping us here in NH, so that's a plus. The kids have some good friends and the idea of summer "get togethers" have been tossed around to keep them close to each other.
I really hope that people are nice and welcoming, I know I would want to be towards someone new, but that's just me. I've had my fill of snobby "I'm better then you" people who turn their noses up because they feel they are above you... not my kinda people. Anyway, I'm not gonna get started on a rant about that.
My husband lived in Tn and Georgia for a while and never had anything negative to say about the people. I lived in Texas for a short time and my only observation was that they really didn't drive all that well... very aggressive! I didn't mind the heat there, but like lovesMountains said, most places have air conditioning.
Sounds like you are good candidates for really enjoying life here in NC
I don't hate it...at all. Its just not home. I really dislike the heat, I miss the fall in New England, Family , friends, things i didn't think i'd miss but do. ..wouldn't matter where i lived down here. In fact I live in Mt. Holly and love it here. Its a true hidden gem. 25 minutes from the city, no traffic, little crime, not expensive. I wouldn't trade it for South Charlotte for anything.
No argument that the area is nice... However, now I understand where your schools comments are coming from. I don't want to offend anyone, but if schools are one of the most important factors in where to live within the Charlotte metro - why did you chose Gaston county?
Heat is tough..like you say, you can always throw some extra clothes on...in 90+ ...you stay inside...how is that any different than back in the north in january?
This is relative, though. I would rather be outside when it's 95 than when it's 15. It all depends on the person. I guess that's why we moved out of MI...

Mikey, Gaston County provides the absolutely best commute into Uptown & access to the airport from outside of Charlotte. That said, the schools are a mixed bag. Even in Gastonia itself, schools range from really good (9) to wretched. GreatSchools - Public and Private School Ratings, Reviews and Parent Community Schools in City of Kings Mountain (Cleveland County side of town) are consistantly good as are the schools in Lincoln County (with few exceptions). Those locations do add time to the commute, but are do-able, with minimal traffic.
I'm not trying to answer for the poster, but tossing out a bit of background information.
NCDOT has decreed that there will be a commuter train from Kings Mountain to Gastonia to Charlotte, which will, eventually, extend westward from Kings Mountain. At that point there will probably be enough pressure on Gaston County that the school quality will improve.

Yes, yes, and yes... I completely agree with everything you're saying. The backstory is that we had a bit of a back/forth over NC schools vs "North" schools (specifically CT).
I thought the comparison was to the best current schools in the Charlotte area - using greatschools as a gauge where Elem/Middle/HS all were at a 9 or 10 rating. Living in the Mt Holly area where the schools get 6ish ratings is not fair to label the entire metro schools like that.

COMPLETELY agree
I HATE wearing heavy clothes, and layers of them, in the winter - yuck.
You wind up feeling and looking like the Michelin Man
Give me heat and shorts and light clothing any day and I'm much happier

I agree totally. I guess where I'm coming from is that the powers that be, in Gaston County, do not feel the pressure, at this time, because people are happy enough to buy in for the great commute.
Oddly enough, Gaston County is starting to lose out on businesses to Cleveland County, which has lower taxes & better schools. Businesses that want proximity to Charlotte are coming to Kings Mountain (City & unincorparated) If Charlotte is not a factor, they go further out into the county. It appears that the same is happening in Lincoln County. However, the commuter train is probably going to happen within 5 years or less. Charlotte has refused to accept the train, so it has to wait for the NCDOT transportation center, & will probably entail a 2 or 3 year track rehabilitation. While there will be a stop for Belmont & Mt Holly, the addition of a commuter train to Kings Mountain, with much better schools, will tip the balance for some.
Now, I could be wrong on this timeline. Greyhound recently opened a bus stop in City of Kings Mountain, so as people become aware, commuters may start taking that into Charlotte That might push the issue earlier than I think.
Where I'm coming from is that the push for more consistantly good schools in Gaston County will probably come from growth in Lincoln & Cleveland counties, in my opinion.
You're right that projecting mediocre schools in Gaston County on the whole metro area is totally unfair.

For the heck of it, I went to www.greatschools.org to check the rating of the high school my step-children attended in Pa. It is considered one of the poorest schools in the area. Rating 6. They both have college degrees from major universities. One is pursuing his MBA the other is at the U of Texas Dept of Physics pursuing her PhD. This is her 3rd summer at Los Alamos National Science Laboratory(some of you maybe too young to know the significance of that place). Their mother never let them slack off, expected alot from them, and they are producing.
My point is, you can't expect the school to do everything. You have to share some of the educational responsibility.
