My buddy lent a guy his phone in Lincoln Park right off of North and Halsted, he never saw the phone again.

I lent my phone to a woman at a bus stop one time. She gave it back with no problems, but later in the day some guy called me and asked for some woman's name I'd never heard. He talked super thug-like and I could barely understand him. I had to explain twice that I didn't know the woman and that I just let her use my phone. lol.

Really?

Sounds more like a trip to the hospital scam. But why does he need me to send him there after beating his face in for stealing my phone?

I've needed to borrow a cell phone from a stranger twice, both times they let me, but one time the dude was acting very paranoid like I was gonna run away, I thought he was a jerk.

Pretty much. I have let people use my phone a couple of times, but I could tell they were legit.

Not always. Most of the time it's an honest person who doesn't have their phone on them, what do they do? There aren't pay phones on every corner like the old days, when manufacturing was everywhere.

I've lent my phone out a few times. All times I dial the number to make sure its not some long distance number, and I make sure I'm either in a safe place (in front of courthouse), or that I could catch the person if they tried to do anything (one was a overweight guy). However knowing how delicate my smart phone is now, I'd be hesitant, because if it gets dropped, I'm paying for it, and I know it will break.

Even though I no longer live in the Chicago area......I still have one friend who lives there and works downtown (loop). He has had this "phone borrow" thing happen several times................soooo, he carries a set of handcuffs with him.........yea that's right..........he will let a person use his phone (after he dials the number), IF they agree to be handcuffed TO HIM or a convienient sign pole while using his phone.

He says about 50% of the time, the person agrees
