As other posters have mentioned there's a stark difference in police presence on one side of the street to the other.

About 40 feet wide strip of asphalt.

Since Oak Park is a separate city, there is a concrete city limit line between the two. It's not like with some neighborhoods within the city where boundaries can be fuzzy or disputed.

So there's a definite change in police presence, but not exactly the Berlin Wall..OK

My infamous PBS Chicago neighborhood video, made in the early 2000s, described Austin as a "stable middle-class African-American enclave"....I guess that things have changed a little since then...

Its kinda like the border between Jamaica Plain and Brookline, except 10-fold more stark.

Thanks, that makes the description a little more visual for me..

I actually like this PBS Chicago DVD, but I suspect that a few regulars here would have more than a few laughs at it. There's some PR at work here obviously ( esp when they never mention Englewood, or Humboldt Park, but then again, they don't mention Hyde Park, either)...

I'm sure that you seen a few interesting things on your commute to and from Oak Park?...

I have no idea. I was just responding about the city boundary because the "if any" part of your question made it sound like you weren't sure if there was a definite boundary between the two, which made me wonder if you thought they might be loosely-defined neighborhoods or something, rather than separate cities. Sorry if I misunderstood.

FWIW, there's actually a gradient of crime going east of Austin Blvd as well as west. The area immediately east of the Blvd has relatively lower crime than east of Central Ave. I suspect if you looked at the median income levels, they would be higher in West Austin (and I'm not talking about Galewood) than East Austin.
