Yeah I know they were never on the same level, I'm aware of that... used to live in Chicago until 2003, then I moved to the West Coast and never really gave Chicago a second thought... now I'm wondering what happened to my old city. I remember seeing the demographics on Rogers Park in 2000 and seeing it was pretty racially and economically diverse.

Also, back in the late 90s, early 2000s, when Wicker Park and Bucktown were absolutely *on fire* hot hot hot everyone said Humboldt Park was the next neighborhood to go big big big. Has that happened?

Also, has anyone sighted hipsters in Markham or Harvey? I know they gravitate towards low prices and troubled areas. Wondering what happened down there. Also, how is Cicero doing? My dad used to live there. I heard it's very Latino now, but what else?

Well to answer the original question about RP and HP, no, they are not fully gentrified and will not be for some time, if ever. The recession pretty much put a hold on gentrification in the areas. HP does have some construction activities here and there, but these neighborhoods are no where near even being considered gentrified (IMO).

I do not know about Markham or Harvey; the thing about hipsters is they prefer to stay near transportation and I doubt those 2 burbs have any appeal on that level. The pattern seems to be that hipsters always move to the next hood out. Right now, Logan Square and Pilsen are getting influxes of hipsters; I doubt that the burbs will see hipsters for a while, if ever (although you do see people copping their fashion style out in the burbs from time to time).

Wow, so it sounds like gentrification has not taken a hold in Chicago like it has in the coastal cities... I thought the entire West Side would've been all dolled up in the decade since I've been there. Logan Square was the up-and-coming neighborhood when I left. Pilsen though, that's a change. There was not much going on there in 2003 if I recall correctly.

Rogers Park I would've bet a lot of money on for sure.

I think a lot more gentrifying is going on south of the loop in neighborhoods like Bronzeville( Oakland, Douglas, Grand Blvd)

I sure hope whatever gentrification happening in Rogers Park hits Howard Street itself. The station itself is fine but the area east (to Sheridan) still needs some work.

Rogers Park might have a little gentrification here and there, but on the whole? No. Humboldt Park in some areas has some gentrification and there are hipsters living in certain areas of there now. There are some good restaurants there that have opened within the last 5 years and there are some new ones opening soon as well. On the whole though? No.

Wicker Park and Bucktown are still hot. That has spread now to Ukrainian Village and Logan Square. Logan Square I would say in areas has gentrified. Both of these areas you can find $1+ million condos/homes and in Logan Square places are opening up all the time. There are going to be a ton of new restaurants/bars opening there too within the next few months.

You can see little bits and pieces of gentrification in areas like Albany Park and Irving Park but it's not a lot. Just every here and again. There has been some quiet, and slow gentrification of Bronzeville too and the next area for it will be kind of on the border of Near South Side and Bronzeville with the new DePaul arena/expansion of McCormick Place and Motor Row entertainment district.

Near West Side too maybe. Maybe it was like that before you left, but many "hot" restaurants put in there and in some areas you can definitely see new expensive homes/condos being put up next to old buildings.

From what I have seen what is hot right now is Logan Square, Avondale and the South Loop. Also the UIC area is getting hot too.

The thing with Humboldt Park is once you go west of the park, it's not the easiest to live without a car and you can't rely and there is not train anywhere near in a short walking distance.

Forgot about Avondale. I wouldn't say it's HOT but it's got some people going there and I think there's more nightlife there than there was before. South Loop is true too..especially since 2003 I think...more stuff to be built there.

Technically too River North/Gold Coast/North end of the Loop/Streeterville is too..of course. Since 2003, a number of buildings have gone up there too and they continue to do so and will continue a little bit.

Wicker Park/Bucktown are still hot in the sense that people are moving there, things are being built a little bit, and shops/restaurants/etc are opening up still.

True of a lot of areas, but it's not the worst you could do. I mean honestly, the same can be said about say...Huron and Western, but it's still alright.
