1) They are not a hassle to get; you can get them the Jewel grocery stores or go to the I-Pass website to order one online or by phone. Alternately, if you live in a state that issues EZ-Pass transponders, just get one of those. I-Pass and EZ-Pass are compatible systems, which is extra-handy if you travel in EZ-Pass states like PA, NJ, DE, IN, OH, WV, VA, NY, NH -- pretty much the entire Northeast plus IN, OH and IL.

2) They are not expensive. The up-front cost is $50; $40 of which is pre-paid tolls and $10 of which is a deposit fee returnable upon return of the transponder. Not only that but your toll fare is half that of paying by cash -- where a cash payer is charged $1.00, an i-pass user is only charged 50 cents.

3) You don't have to be an Illinois resident.
Thanks! I think I will order one.

To active the transponder, you need to call the ISTHA. They will listen to your address and other information, and enter it into the system with the accuracy of someone who really needs "Hooked on Phonics." The online account management system works well for updating anything and everything, however. Plus, it shows you all the exciting toll points you've been through, and how much money you spend "living it large" on the Illinois Tollway System.

>>you could be in for a nasty surprise.

actually, this happened to us too.

all we got was a letter in the mail. twice actually.

the first time, DH changed his email addy and forgot to update the IPASS
second time, our CC was canceled because of fraud -- so our cc company gave us new cards, and again, DH didnt update IPASS.

we got the letters then updated our info, can't recall if he called in or not, i'm assuming so to get it straightened out right away ... but no additional charges or anything.

But -- yes, it's a good thing to always keep it updated.
