It's the reversal of decades of hard won progress on crime.

Maybe you could let these people know that it used to be worse 30 years ago so no big deal?

I get it, if you live in Lincoln Park or Schaumberg it's just news stories. If you live some parts of Chicago...an extra 100-150 killed are going to be coming out of people you know.

Maximum sentence for aggravated discharge of a firearm is 15 years. I bet he gets sentenced to half that. Maybe. And then doesn't even serve THAT full term.

It's not just "news stories" in Lincoln Park any more. The well-to-do neighborhoods have now become target-rich environments for robberies and carjackings.

For almost all my adult life living and working in and around Chicago, I had never known or met anyone who had been carjacked. As of the last two years, I now know three people who have. It's like Johannesburg out there.

Here we go again: Teen charged with ‘ambush’ murder during carjacking attempt has been arrested 3 times for felonies since 2021, prosecutors say

[The suspect] was arrested twice for gun violations in 2021, but both cases were resolved with “informal adjustments,” [Prosecutor Anne] McCord reported. In March of last year, Harvey was arrested for possessing a stolen motor vehicle, and that case was “diverted,” McCord said.

Another victory for the cause of "social justice." Well done again, Cook County Criminal Justice System.

I would say that living in a "safe" part of Chicago and keeping out of the gangs (and keeping post-midnight activities to a minimum), you are in no more danger of being murdered now than you have been. Murders have almost exclusively been gang or domestic related, or between people that know each other. Sure, there are occasional random murders everywhere, but were talking very small numbers.

But, I do agree that despite those attributes above, being a victim of a non-murder crime has definitely risen. Carjackings have been on the rise since 2020 and other crimes like stealing phones, wallets, harassment on trains, etc. has gone up, and even in the nicer areas of the city. There is an intersection of desperation and opportunity that is bad right now. With inflation up, people are more desperate. With soft non-violent crime policies, opportunities have gone up.

Yes, that certainly compounds the problem going forward in light of what you say about carjackings, etc…
The anti-policing stance is already making it difficult to get new hires, violent crime is now encouraged, almost promoted…

Do you really believe that 17 year old punk is desperate because of inflation?

It never crossed his mind to go flip burgers and or get a degree. My guess is he wasn't planning to for anything but a snug cell, and he may finally get one this time. Three strikes, yeah.

No - it was a general comment. Increasing costs are going to make people more desperate and those on the fringes will resort to more extreme measures to survive. This doesn't apply to each and every person, obviously.

The problem is that Chicago has the HIGHEST total murders of any city. That’s like saying you got a garage of 70 this year compared the grade of 60 you had 30 years ago. But if your 70 grade is still the lowest grade in the class, THAT’S A PROBLEM!

Chicago is the 3rd largest city, so we're going to have the highest in many categories. The key to look at is per capita.

No, the key is to look at your peer cities. NYC population 8 million and LA population 5 million, 1st and 2nd largest cities, respectively, each have less total crime than Chicago (3 million). So the “per capita” game doesn’t work for that argument.
