ok, here's the deal. i'm new to the chicago area and will be attending "A" university located downton chicago. i know people in and around the midwest, i have friends in chicago too but this is my main concern...

i know there's a very big underground society in chicago, if you know what i mean. by underground society i am speaking of 'the invisible hand' that is usually referred to as, the mob or the mafia. now, for someone my age (18-30-will not be specific for security reasons) how aware should i be of who i mingle and interact with on and off campus? most of the people i know in chicago are good people e.g - nice families, middle/upper whatever you wanna call it - but am i still safe? how big of a threat is there to accidentally build a relationship with people that are not exactly 'what they seem' on the surface and might have 'other intentions' that you might not be aware of?

How deep is this hole and how many people have had some sort of contact, either by accident or willingly, with the underground business that takes place and has taken place in this city for years and years? what if i'm not really affraid to hang around with the green-eyed herd? are my concerns legit or am i just being a bit too paranoid?

thanks in advance.

Nobody that has connections or has had contact is going to tell you much of anything about it.

Well if you have friends here then maybe you already unknowingly know some. Is that good enough? Yes, I think you are being (unreasonably) paranoid.

Chicago and the surrounding metro area holds 8 million people approximately. That's 8 million people that you cannot and should not trust, not a single one, probably not even me as I type this. Get out while you can.

Okay, I'm kidding. Seriously, you are going to have to put in a lot of effort to 1) meet someone in the mafia and 2) find out they are in the mafia.

I'm about 75% Italian and have yet to meet someone in the mob.

Are you frickin' serious? I think you've been watching too many mob movies on tv.

And you don't want to give away your exact age because if you told your age, the mobsters who intently scan city-data would be able to identify you? That's right, there's only about a million Chicagoans under the age of 30, it should be easy to identify you based on your two posts on this forum.

I can't believe you're serious.

This might be the silliest thread I've seen in the Chicago forums yet. And there's a lot of competition.

Just make sure you're not attending University of Mafia. Its students tend to be slightly connected.

If you think that is 'reasonable paranoia' you have to see a doctor.
