I really have no desire to get an air conditioner. Even when I lived in an apartment with central air, I only ran it a few times a year. It's natural to be in touch with the seasons. Too hot? Get your ass off the couch and go outdoors.
Oh shut up.

No. Quit whining. This isn't Texas or Arizona. Air conditioning is not a necessity.

I'm sure the hundreds of people that have died in various heat waves over the couple decades will be so relieved to hear that. Maybe you could stand over their graves and tell them to quit whining.

People who die in heat waves are the elderly, the sick and the homeless. In the event of an actual heat wave, there are places for these people to take refuge.

I'd venture to say that the people posting in this thread about air conditioning being a necessity are none of the above. Just because they've gotten used to certain comforts in life, i.e. an air conditioned apartment with the thermostat held at 72 degrees, does not make it a necessity. It is a luxury.

true, AC isn't needed as much as it is in the South (I went a good chunk of my life w/o it), but don't insult people and get all snotty if people prefer to have AC. people who aren't elderly, homeless, or sick do suffer and die from heat stroke all the time

Meh -- I'm with you. Who cares about a bunch of old or sick people or bums dying. They're a drag on society anyway. Oh, and infants too -- you forgot about them. The little whiners.

Or, instead of resorting to taking refuge in an air-conditioned building with a bunch of strangers, they can just get a window unit for their apartment.

Get your ass out of the library in the daytime and sit in the sun all day when it is over 85 and I bet you will change your tune.

And stuff that wine glass and bottle where the sun don't shine.

You forgot. It is a luxury even when it ridiculously extremely hot out. And why spend $25-$75 a month for as many as 4-5 months a year when you can take the savings and buy several bottles of wine? Wine is not a luxury. And it does not create any greenhouse gases and other types of pollution (nor does it degrade natural resources) to produce and transport!

And who needs heat in the winter? It is a luxury. This ain't Alaska yo.
