I'm going to be moving to Chicago soon, and am looking at apartments. Why is it that very few even have an air conditioner? This seems odd? Even in new, high rise buildings, alot don't have air conditioners?

Doesn't it get hot in Chicago in the summer, or is it completely cool due to proximity to the lake?

Just wondering. Seems a little odd to me that i'd be paying $1300 for a near south side apartment, with absolutely no option for an air conditioner...

I would be shocked to hear new high buildings dont have A/C> i believe they all have central AC either for the building or for each unit. Chicago doesnt usually go over 100 degrees in the summer. Expect 70-80-90 ish weather from May to Oct

Maybe they aren't so new...but I would estimate ~50% of the listing i look at don't mention A/C as an amenity.

I don't have it. But then again, I get a breeze off the lake, so it's only unbearable a few days a year.

typically a renter is responsible for buy a window unit for the summer if they'd like AC. They can be bought used in the winter for around $50 on craigslist or at the thrift store or for about $125 in spring and summer.

Because most of the buildings are old.

I highly doubt that. Either you didn't see the climate control panel on the wall or the building has central climate control for the entire building.

Living near the lake helps. Temperature in summer varies greatly. The last two summers I've run my A/C for maybe 10 days, combined. The summer before, it seems like I never turned it off.

If it's an older building with no A/C, Get a window unit or two.

I've never had air conditioning my entire life. Window and ceiling fans usually do the trick, although Im sure its different living in a high rise. We do have a small room air conditioner for days it gets oppressive, but thats maybe a week out of the year
