In fact, the area around the school still is pretty crappy.
If they took any student it would not be as good as it is. The best schools are usually selective, for good reason. Northwestern and University of Chicago are extremely difficult to get into, because they are top notch schools. The women stated that there are no good schools in the area, my point was that there is one very good school, 2 if you count St. Ignatius.

Actually she framed it by asking what options the kids have there, not just what schools are there. Whitney Young is not a realistic option for 99% of CPS students. I'm guessing she would have stayed if it was.

Tomato tomato. Nevertheless, the majority of CPS students are dunces. I'll admit, if you are competing for one spot against 99 other kids, the odds seem intimidating. However, once you realize that 80 of those kids have the IQ of a cat, it's not as intimidating. Did you realize that the average CPS freshman has a GPA of 1.9 and 2.6f's, and misses 19 days of school. That's 4 weeks in a 9 month period. That's average, that means half of the kids are worse than that.

Getting back on point. I got some calls from out of state friends today and they mentioned seeing this story on "Good Morning, America" or one of those national broadcast morning programs. I did not realize it was receiving national attention. Do you think Obama is going to make a statement or that civil rights leaders will take this up or will this story fizzle out like so many others?

ETA: Spoke too soon. Just saw Jesse Jackson's spiel.

You don't seem to have any conception of how brutally competitive the magnet school admissions process schools is. Getting into Yale is easier. They turn away hundreds of high-testing, straight-A students every year. Being absent even a few days during your middle school years pretty much ruins your chances of getting into one. Even for most very bright and accomplished CPS students, they are not a realistic option.
