What does it mean to be declared a "saint"? I think that the word has a different meaning (for Roman Catholics) than it's original Biblical meaning.
I am not trying to be glib. But this is the type of thing about the Roman Catholic church that bothers me. As if they have a say in how God will view things, and that God is waiting to hear them so that He will know how to proceed.

It is a religious rank that catholics believe is honorable or prestigious to God. Anyone who believes in Jesus alone for their salvation is a saint according to the bible. Catholics do not believe this. God's grace puts all of us on equal ground. If you believe in Jesus your righteousness is just as much as the next believer because it is Jesus' righteousness, not yours. Catholics do not believe this either. They believe in works, praying through saints and Mary before statues shaped into what they think looks like them, big churches and religious practices to earn your salvation or maintain it and its all an insult to the grace of God. The ranks catholics have created within their church is just another work of their hands they believe God finds pleasing or favorable.
Hoo boy. Let's say that what we are talking about is little s saint and Big S Saint. Every Christian is a saint, but Saints are people whose lives and/or works demonstrate special qualities that are worth emulating. This does not require any special distinction from God, it is a matter for the Catholic Church and they have certain standards they apply before a person is listed as one who is especially worth emulating. Call them heroes if you will. No big deal to the rest of us.

It appears so (based on what's going on), God is waiting for directions from Catholic Church. Afterall, if people buy confessions, they are forgiven by God. If they give money to the church, their purgatory will be less hot or will last fewer days. If they light candles and bring coins to the church, they can make the fate of their loves ones more pleasing in the afterlife.

Some shreds of Catholicism are hard to shed. Although I have happily separated myself from the Holy See, I retain an affection for saints - particularly the one I was named after - Francis of Assisi.
I have an affinity for animals and nature. Is it because of, or despite, or unrelated to, my Catholic patronymic?

But I'm appreciative of, and acknowledge a possible connection.

When I was processing in I was asked about my faith tradition, and as an atheist I said I had none. They asked if it would be ok to list me as Roman Catholic and I said, "why not?" When I got my dogtags I was a Roman Catholic......... it didn't take, though.

Despite a father who was Chairman of the local Catholic School Board, and 10 years of teachings in a strictly Catholic environment by nuns (complete with strappings) and several years as an altar boy -- my Catholicism didn't stick either.
So colour me unsurprised that yours didn't last long.
From what I understand is that the saints of the Catholic Faith is there for a witness of Christ , and people can turn to study them for their mentors .

Oh, Catholics believe that anyone who dies and is going to heaven is a saint as the other post mentioned. To designate a big Saint is where the Catholic Church looks at the facts and is then makes a decision according to age old rules. Sainthood can take years and decades or more. Also, if you are martyred for your beliefs or faith of Jesus Christ, you automatically become a Saint.
But it all comes down to the only Church created by Jesus and given His Authority (Keys) to make the call or canonize YOUR bible.
Come on home. Jesus would have wanted it that way.
