The Pope did not even intimate that there should be no consequences for exercising "conscientious objection" . . . only that it is a right we all have. In the case of employment, that could include dismissal. In the case of an elected official, there could be other consequences consistent with the jurisdiction.

Which explains why none of them had any problem with Kim Davis going to jail. The irony is such action cost the tax payers more money and only made the situation worse.

That's the problem. They think the only solution is to hurt people who don't agree with them. There is no desire to find solutions which satisfy both parties.

As in denying them a marriage license?

Davis was offered an accommodation, SHE REFUSED and that is why she went to jail. She didn't go to jail because the judge wouldn't offer an accommodation for her beliefs.

That's the mindset I am talking about. You don't even think about solving a problem.

There are ways to honor her desire to live by her faith while making sure people get their license.

Kim was OFFERED an accommodation by the judge. SHE REFUSED that accommodation.

Who was making the situation worse? The one OFFERING a compromise, or the one who refused it?

Anyone else think this is just a matter of a couple media outlets taking something the pope said generally and spinning it to apply to the Kim Davis kerfuffle? Lawd knows they've been trying to force-fit everything else he's said & done on his visit here to fit the current American political agenda.

She will be charged for her visit. Going to jail is not free. If she refuses to pay, the State will garnish her salary. She will be billed.

That is how it works. No worries for the taxpayers. They will be compensated by Kim Davis.

That's called an "inconvenience". They could have easily drove to another county to get it, or find another bakery instead of seeking to drive someone out of business.
