If that's the case Betsey than why don't you believe Jesus when He said he would return in the 1st century? This is the part I don't understand about "literalists".

Clearly the Disciples has joined the idea of the end of the world, with the statement that the Jewish temple would be ripped down.
They believed Jesus was talking about the one in the same single event in the future...
This then helps us understand the "This Generation" wording in contexty of the two different answers Jesus was giving to two different questions...

There is only one question.. the "and" indicates that the first correlates to the second. The first is general the second specific but the same question ultimately.
