I lived in Clifton Heights (200 block of West McMillan St.) between 1990 and 1995. I loved living there, but there were two boys, aged maybe 10-12 at the most, who were most disturbing. To this day, I regret never picking up the phone to call Children's Services.

The first time I encountered them was on W. McMillan one night (a weeknight during the school year) about 11 p.m., as I was on my way home from a movie. They were holding copies of the paper catalogue for night school classes (how to play bridge, bookbinding, learning contra dancing, etc.) that were in metal boxes at most intersections. One offered to sell it to me for $.50, while holding his finger over the word FREE in the upper right-hand corner of the cover.

The next time was on a Sunday morning. I was in Duttenhofer's Book Treasures, and a customer pointed the boys out to us. Apparently, they were selling The New York Times and The Cincinnati Enquirer for $1 off the cover price. What they did was put enough money in a vend box to buy one copy, and then take the whole stack of papers out of the box.

I doubt they have come to any good end. They may be among the criminals described in this thread.

I never had a bad experience with crime in Clifton. I worked a third-shift job at the Cincinnati post office, and if my shift ended at 3 a.m., I often walked home, since the bus did not run at that hour. I walked through the west end and all those narrow streets south of McMillan, and never had any problem. Did I just have a guardian angel that worked overtime for me?
