Yeah and thats why I had said that the only way for Tucson to pick up to Phoenix's level is for Phoenix to have a decline and Tucson to go through some rapid accelerated growth like the way Raleigh is.
But chances of that happening is none. At least in the near future.
In certain ways, Austin already outshines the larger Texan cities in terms of name recognition--however, it's really unlikely for Austin to beat the other large texan cities in anything else.
Maybe some of the Great Plains and Mountain West states will have a shakeup of rankings, but I really don't keep track of the area because I suck.
Maybe Ft Worth and San Antonio, but not Houston and Dallas, IMO.
I believe you, and it might be a demographic issue. The folks I know are usually fairly young and somewhat involved in some kind of art, so they hear about Houston and Dallas but they know about Austin. For an older demographic, Austin might very well be just a footnote.

I agree with Akhenaton, no way Austin outshines Dallas and Houston in name recognition.
Houston and Dallas has had nearly 100% name recognition for the last 100 years while Austin is just coming up.
Austin will maybe match Houston and Dallas on name recognition but it is pretty hard to beat near complete name recognition.
Houston was the capital of the Country boy not no darn state
we were not no state till 1845
apart from Austin, (and the four other minor Texas capitals), DC, and Philly how many other cities can claim that
