I chose "other." I'm not overwhelmingly familiar with Philly, but, I grew up in a Northeastern city (Boston), later lived in NYC, and moved away from both. My parents love Philly and have told me that they could see me living there, but I get the feeling it's more a ploy to get me closer to home - my sister hates it there, as does my best friend, and I'm much more inclined to follow their advice on the matter.
I also lived in Seattle for much of my childhood, and moved back as an adult for a year and a half in '08. My overall experience was a big negative. I have a few positive things to say about it, but overall? I would never, under any circumstances, consider moving back there. To the point that, if I were married and she reeeeeeeeeally wanted to move to Seattle, I'd legally separate, or file a divorce before moving there again. I really dislike the social climate and weather there, and the toll that both took on me... absolutely not ever again.
So, all told, I really have minimal desire to live in Philly, and absolutely no desire to live in Seattle. I would take LA (where I currently am), SF (where I was until recently and still hold a residence), as well as Portland, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Houston, Dallas, Boston, and even NYC again over either place.
I have been to Portland in the summer so I know about the beautiful scenery. Of course there wasn't much sun that summer but it was a break from the heat and humidity of the east. I debated going on to Seattle but decided one Pac-northwest city was as good as another.
Oh, but the cities are quite different in many ways. Seattle is more business-aggressive and has a bigger city feel. Portland is more livable, and perhaps more quaint and laid-back. Not saying one is better than the other, but there is a difference.
Seattle feels like a overgrown mountain side farming town compared to Phillys urban fabric imo. The outdoors is a fine life but it's not city life, that's how I feel about every west coast city except SF
Is there anything in Seattle that can replicate Center City Philly? I don't think so
Natural setting for one, can be very dramtic is also pretty vibrant and has better shopping, plus Pikes market is pretty awesome, likely a tad better than RTM. It does have some shortcomings in this comparison but Seattle is no sloutch and especially on vistas absolutely would excel
No offense to those cities or anything I just don't like their climates both natural & political.
I agree, not even in the running if I was considering a move....they would be below 20 other locations I would consider first.
