If the thread was just which do I prefer it would be Detroit, Kansas City, St Louis, New Orleans, Omaha. But with that criteria of bright future...

Detroit is grim at this point still and only time will tell if it will recover. Economy is down and Population is down.
New Orleans is struggling to recover still with a shifting population still trying to balance out.
St Louis has been making very strong economic gains but minimal populatio growth.
Omaha is strong and growing but Warren Buffet is also getting older and it will be interesting to see how Omaha is affected by the end of his era. It might not cause any changes but hard to say yet.
Kansas City however saw strong economic and population growth as well as quietly created the nation's 3rd largest stock exchange supporting now a bit over 10% the US Stock Market.

Detroit had -1.9% GDP :: -1.1% MSA Pop
Kansas City had +1.3% GDP :: +12.61% MSA Pop
Omaha had +1.3% GDP :: +10.75% MSA Pop
St Louis had +2.6% GDP :: +4.83% MSA Pop
New Orleans had -0.5% GDP :: -9.61% Pop

So overall I'd say St Louis is top with Kansas City in 2nd and Omaha in a close third.

I don't why, but I love Warren Buffet lol. We always talk about him in school, he actually came to my school last year. I didn't get a chance to meet him though

The city is big, stop focusing on one side. I doubt you can see every part of Detroit from 1 or 2 visits.

I like Detroit. The main reason I ranked it 4th is it's just too cold too much of the year. I think I would would rather live there than New Orleans though, so I probably should have ranked it 3rd plus it's close to a lot of other cool cities too.

St. Louis probably does not beat New Orleans if Katrina had not occurred, but that is a no brainer every one can probably agree on. If you were strictly picking based on safety and liveability, Kansas City deserves a better rating.

IMO New Orleans clearly wins on downtown, architecture, charm, and nightlife. I think New Orleans is one of the most interesting and beautiful cities in the country. Beautiful old architecture both downtown and in the residential areas. And the nightlife is among the best in the country.

As for the future of New Orleans, I feel that it is growing in the right direction. Katrina obviously took a huge toll on the city and its population, but it is growing quickly now. The main thing standing in its way is that the city is not as safe as it should be. It unfortunately has a high murder rate, and lowering that needs to be one of the city's main objectives.

You must not know much about New Orleans. Katrina pretty much saved the city.

New Orleans is a cool city but overrated as far as architecture. I think both St. Louis and Detroit have far more interesting architecture city wide and that's even with mass disinvestment and decay. New Orleans does have the best nightlife, because partying is practically the culture there. Charm is subjective and all of these cities are making strides as far as downtown is concerned.

I voted St. Louis. It feels more "healthier".

I would place New Orleans in second, Kansas City in third, Omaha fourth and Detroit last.
