US News is a pretty awful undergraduate source in reality, I mean the likes of Berkeley, University of Texas and other public schools aren't given the same value as private institutions. There's strong biases with US News on their undergraduate rankings, they amend those biases in the graduate school level though.

Miami is no where on New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, or Phildelphia's level academically. Also "best school" between the 5 cities depends largely on preference on what you want to study, where you can tolerate weather, and what is more convenient for you. For example, Chicago has better schools for Law School, Los Angeles is better for Medicine, etc.

New York is not the biggest outlier in all categories, as some are and always will be subjective.

I think it keeps up well with the others. new york and los angeles on a tier higher, chicago and philadelphia i think are very similar, and miami is very different than all of them.

Wow.

You and I have very different ideas about what constitutes "culture."

I grew up near Miami and I still have family living there. I love Miami and I love reading about the history of Miami from way back when it was called Fort Dallas during the Seminole Wars in the mid-19th Century. I lived at different times in Coconut Grove, Opa Locka, and Kendall.

However I don't know what "seaside culture" is. What is that? Going to the beach? Collecting sea shells? Cruising up and down Collins Avenue?

To me culture is about:

  • Symphony Orchestras
  • Art Museums and Galleries
  • The Opera
  • Literary Societies and Salons
  • The Ballet
  • Foreign and Independent Film Festivals
  • Historic buildings, districts, monuments, museums
  • The Theater
  • Artists colonies and arts festivals
  • Philosophical Societies
  • Choral Societies and organizations
  • National and ethnic folkloric festivals
  • Great Architecture and great architects
  • Botanic gardens, arboretums, and public parks
  • Public art, murals, sculpture, monuments
  • Urban archeology and anthropology
etc.

In these things, Miami is not even in the same league as Philadelphia.

Yes, we do seem to differ quite a bit.

- Taking water taxi's daily.
- Going on ferry's on the weekend because they're only 5 minutes from where you live.
- Going to the beach the open weekday nights you aren't busy.
- Partying at the beach.
- Getting food at the beach.
- Seeing the downtown skyline from the beach.
- Going to a tall tower and seeing the water.
- Yes, even collecting sea shells and giving them to your kids, telling them stories about it.
- Grabbing a surf board and going in the water.
- Fishing (I personally don't because I'm a pacifist but like to watch)
- Beach volleyball
- Girls
- Sunscreen
- Beach homes
- Beach cultured foods (Food that matches the magnificent atmosphere especially at the beach)
- Getting sand in your car, then having to clean up
- Sandals
- Warm weather

Basically that is what I mean by seaside culture. I think of culture as particular traits from a general mass of a population designated by languages, weather, location, activities, atmosphere, food, and especially geographical settings.

For example, its apart of Japanese culture and in many places acceptable to eat whale meat, because Japanese culture partially revolves around fishing since its geographically on an island.

No doubt. But aside from occasional art galleries, zoo's, and museums, I don't care for the rest of the things. Its rather boring for me, but its fantastic for Philadelphia and other cities that have superb "cultural institutions" such as those listed above.

Nor would Philadelphia be in the same league with Miami if the criterion for culture were...

* Beaches
* Quality of waterfront
* Clubs
* Restaurant variety
* Beach parties
* The ability to ferry around
* Great marinas
* Aquariums
* Golf courses
* Skyline
* Overall, energetic beach atmosphere

Culture varies greatly among age group and just as many people will take to Miami's youthful, fiery, beach city exuberance as people will enjoy Philadelphia's historical amenities and museums, etc.

That's not culture. That's leisure.

The primary definition of culture is: "the act of developing the intellectual and moral faculties especially by education"

Miami is last among these cities in terms of culture.

Culture - Definition and More from the Free Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Definition of leisure: "Leisure, or free time, is time spent away from business, work, and domestic chores. It is also the periods of time before or after necessary activities such as eating, sleeping and, where it is compulsory, education." - wikipedia

Miami is world-renowned for its leisure activities.

I agree, that's leisure, not culture. Having fun on a beach doesn't equate to culture.

But it isnt really economics either.

Its simply the number of branch offices by certain companies in each city. There is no overall economic impact in that ranking at all.

Not trying to change your mind, just wanted to point that out.

princeton=nyc. yale=nyc. nothing you can do to change that so get over it dude.

Actually the Census has already issued a position statement to move Mercer county back to the Philly area and their error (which was technical and Philly had more connectivity than did NYC and Mercer which includes Princeton was historirically part of the Philly MSA) which will be corrected in 2012 with the final Metro alignments by the Census.

In Addition Philadelphia has many excellent institiutions and is commonly considered #2 and/or a top 4 city in terms of education. Philly also has 3 of the top ten liberal arts schools in America among so many others.
