I'm pleasantly surprised that Baltimore didn't find itself in the most negatively viewed cities. I figured people assumed that the entire city was like The Wire (which notwithstanding is one of the greatest TV shows of all time) when there are actually a lot of nice areas of the city.
Seattle ranks in the Top 5 of all 4 regions(Midwest, Northeast, South, West) as far as respondents reacting positively to the city when asked in The Atlantic's survey of how people perceive cities(The 50 largest cities to be exact)
Overall Top 10 cities by most positive reaction
1 Seattle
2 Denver
3 San Francisco
4 San Diego
5 Portland
6 New York 7 Boston
8 Orlando
9 Charlotte 10 Boston
I'm actually not a Seattle lover. I find the Space Needle overrated and the city to just feel kind of depressing. The setting isn't that impressive either.
Everybody has their preferences, but even people that don't like the city itself find that they have to admit Seattle is one of the most stunning natural settings in the nation. Which other cities sit by a body of water, with snow-capped mountain ranges on two sides, topped off with the view of a large volcano on a 3rd side?

Agree, there is no way I think an unbiased perspective can not see the dramatic quality of the setting
On some of the urbanity professed for Seattle I do it as a tad overstated but on setting, absolutely awesome

Unless you like living in a beautiful, vacation like setting year round. From building 747s to Kenworth trucks to designing software or convincing the world to buy crap/overpriced coffee, Seattle still gets things done despite being in the middle of a National Park like setting.
Maybe a vacation spot for some, but Seattle is a pretty robust economy so we're getting work done while living in this environment. Somehow Microsoft, Boeing, Amazon, Starbucks, Tullys, Nintendo USA, TMobile USA, Costco, Nordstrom, Paccar, Expedia, Alaska Airlines, REI and Eddie Bauer among others are able to get a lot done while living in the forest. Some might be surprised at how 'concrete jungle' a lot of Seattle is.....not all pristine parkland and water views.
