This is very interesting.

Seattle ranks in the Top 5 of all 4 regions(Midwest, Northeast, South, West) as far as respondents reacting positively to the city when asked in The Atlantic's survey of how people perceive cities(The 50 largest cities to be exact)

Overall Top 10 cities by most positive reaction
1 Seattle
2 Denver
3 San Francisco
4 San Diego
5 Portland
6 New York
7 Boston
8 Orlando
9 Charlotte
10 Boston

Overall Top 10 cities by most negative reaction
1 Detroit
2 Birmingham
3 Cleveland
4 Oklahoma City
5 Cincinnati
6 St Louis
7 Jacksonville
8 Columbus
9 Milwaukee
10 Salt Lake City

Top 5 cities by region(In Alphabetical Order)by most positive reaction:
Midwest: Boston, Denver, Portland, San Diego, Seattle

Northeast: Boston, New York, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle

South: Austin, Denver, Orlando, Portland, Seattle

West: Denver, Portland, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle

Quote:
Every region rates coastal cities high, with Denver the only inland city making the top five according to any region. On the flip side, all regions rate inland cities near the bottom, with only the Midwest including two cities from the coast – Houston and Los Angeles – in its bottom five.

Further, if we search for cities that yield significantly divergent opinions depending on the region that's rating it, certain cities jump out. Just for example, San Francisco shows distinct sentiment differences depending on the region doing the rating. Respondents in the South and Midwest have less favorable views of the Bay Area city than it enjoys in the Northeast and West.

While certain cities are positively viewed by all regions, each region has a better view of its own cities than those cities of other regions. The South likes southern cities, the West western cities, and so forth. The Midwest appears to be the most self-hating (or at least the least positive toward itself) of the Census regions....

Huh?
That initially confused me as well. I think that it is listing the five cities (anywhere in the country) that people in each of those regions rate the best.

So people in the midwest rate Boston, Denver, Portland, San Diego and Seattle as the best, even though none of those cities are in the midwest.

Imagine if you assigned a point system to the regional top 5 category. For an example, 1 pt for being fifth, 2 for fourth, 3 for third, 4 for second and 5 for first.

The rankings would go:

Den - 13
Bos - 10
Por - 9
SD - 8
Sea - 5

* just messing around; not stirring up a debate.

That was the alphabetical order, not the ranking.

Houston needs some better PR (though could say the same about my home city). When looking at the charts in the link it is amazing how different DFW appears to Hosuton, or is that Austin?

If Austin would love to see the ratings in general of those who have been and have not; overall with places like Seattle, Portland, Austin etc while nice (though I have to be honest Austin seems very over-rated to me but does have some great PR) I wonder if the perception would change?
