I never considered "LA" or "Philly" to be denigrating. "La-la land" on the other hand...

Btw, who the hell calls Detroit "D-town"? I always thought its principal nickname was the Motor City.

No one. I at least never heard it and I used to live in Detroit.

Motor city is a more a nickname publications use (i.e come down to the motor city!)

The most often used nickname when people talk about Detroit is "the D" some people will say "313" but then again referring to a city by the area code is common for just about every city except the big one's that use multiple area codes.

Motown is probably the second most often used.

The "letter" hyphen Town thing should only be made for Houston. Different than Chitown btw. But I have to agree with LA.

"Chocolate city" is a media term for a majority black city run by a black mayor.

I've seen it used for:

DC
NOLA
Detroit
Atlanta
Baltimore

I'm probably forgetting a couple too.....

I've heard people call Dallas "D-town". Another Texas city. Don't know how popular that is, as I never lived in Dallas.

But repeating, that's not a nickname for Detroit I ever heard used.
